Wickford is a small town in the district of Basildon in Essex , about 30 miles east of London, with a population of just over 30,000.
The fast rail service to London Liverpool Street means that many of the residents are commuters, but there is a thriving community centre, swimming pool, library and high street shopping all close to the town centre.
Like many towns, Wickford is suffering the financial recession, with lots of empty shops and a proliferation of charity shops and fast food outlets, but there are still many of us proud of the town where we and our families have grown up. We would like to see it improved without destroying its character, and that means opposing unsightly blocks of flats, many of which have appeared in the town centre without any corresponding upgrade to the infrastructure (roads, school places, health provision etc.)
